LEISURE VILLAGE NEW YORK CLUB

When the New York Club was originally formed in October 2000, its purpose was to enable Leisure Villagers from New York City to find, and to share their stories about their old neighborhoods with, others who might have gone to the same public school, high school or even College. We also wanted to share our views on why we left New York and came to California. The response was encouraging from the very beginning.

We quickly found others with whom we could share these personal experiences in high school and in our neighborhoods. Men talked about their lives in military service, in sports activity, and in social clubs, and women discussed their lives as girls and as young women.  Many of us found that we indeed had gone to the same high schools and even graduated the same year, reliving our youth through sharing these experiences.

Today we are happy to find that the ethnic differences of our youth are no longer of concern to us. Community and common life experiences are the binding force that made us and that make this Club today.

It didn’t take long before the New York Club started to grow.  Today, there are well over 300 members and still growing.  Not everyone is from New York City, but our activities and infectious enthusiasm have attracted people who wanted to be part of it.

Our activities include summer picnics (New York style), dinner-dances with a live big band, several shows annually, dinners, and sometimes we invite entertainers to our Recreation center and offer their performances free to Leisure Village residents.  Information about our upcoming activities, which occasionally occur without much advance notice, is published regularly on Channel 25, and in the Village Voice.

Our regular meetings, which consist mostly of a gab session followed by refreshments, are held in the Assembly Room on the first Thursday of each month.  For more information about our Club, please contact our President, Marty Hasen, at 388-0618.
